Your Story is Important
At the end of the IWJ internship training we participated in the fifth anniversary of the Congress Hotel strike. Unite Here Local 1 reached an agreement with the rest of the Chicago downtown hotels for a living wage and other much needed benefits for employees five years ago. The owner of the Congress pulled out of negotiations saying that because it was one humble family owning the hotel....read more

I didn't know much about unions before I started working at IWJ. I had heard comments over the years like "Unions were important once, but they aren't necessary today." I didn't know where to find accurate information on unions.
Well, IWJ has a great resource. I urge everyone to go to: http://www.iwj.org/materials/materials_wum.html and download "Why Unions Matter."
It is an introductory guide to what unions do, why they are important, and what happens during organizing drives.
